This book is not only about the murder of two Texas TDC officials by inmate, Eroy Brown and the three trials succeeding it. The book also discusses the ways in which the TDC ran prisons and handled prisoners prior to 1984.

Fascinating story - books biggest flaw is the story of the actual trials feels rushed. Berryhill does a terrific job, however, in putting the tale in the context of the times. The events of the early 1980s are still strongly felt in Texas prisons today. The book doesn't quite capture the personalities of some of the principles (to say Bill Habern is a character is a serious understatement), but it is a good contribution to an area with a dearth of scholarship.

Taken from the flap of the book. "April 1982, two white Texas prison officials died at the hands of a black inmate at the Ellis prison farm near Huntsville."The trial was taken from transcripts word by word. The story was good but writing about it was all over the place and dull. Not a smooth read.
